Recent response to a question from one of my clients!

Q: I am starting a staffing service focusing on nursing. Should I begin marketing to nursing homes, or
hospitals first.  I don't know how to start, help please?

A: Beginning can be a daunting task, especially when deciding your first step.  I recommend focusing
your efforts on regions not specific locations.  Regionalizing yourself within a specific geographic
area is much more cost effective, allow you to gauge the response to your efforts, helps in your initial
recruiting efforts and allows you to measure the heartbeat of your location to better compete with the
competition.  Don't over extend yourself too quickly and don't over promise.

I especially enjoy this section of my newsletter.  I use this section to inform my audience of the  side
of staffing that many sometimes don't talk about.  

One of the problems you will find in starting your medical staffing agency is that hospitals at times
may take advantage of your newness.  Promises for future work do not equal dollars and sense.  
Your eagerness to acquire accounts may place you in a negative billing position.  Resist the
temptation to offer free training longer than 4 hours.  Some managers eager to save cost in there
departments needing two days covered will reject an employee after an eight hour shift forcing you to
send a second employee that requires 8hours of free training.  By offering only 4 hours you guarantee
to cover your overhead in case employees get rejected.  

The above scenario are actual events that can happen and have happened to seasoned staffing
companies.  Simply being aware that it exists will help you in dealing with those type of facilities.

How To Brand Your Agency

Common mistakes new medical staffing agencies do when recruiting is offer what the other medical
staffing agencies are offering, they just word it different.  

Strategic branding teaches the need to rise above and climb out of the box of residual dullness.
Common branding mistakes involve the following statements.

  • We offer local contracts
  • We offer insurance
  • We offer direct deposits
  • We can provide you local shifts
  • Etc, Etc.

Strategic Branding for Medical staffing firms enter the recruiting planning strategy with the highest
goal potential.  Yet, the recruits you seek are often looking for positions in unlikely places.  Not all
potential recruits are looking at Monster.com or in “Job Fairs”.  It is also unlikely that you will find all
your recruits in trade magazines or respond to an ad in a newspaper.  Sometimes you will find the
majority of your recruits using only one viable method
described in this manual.  Other times you will
find that a mixture of all the strategies is needed to continually have a stream of potential recruits.

It is possible to eventually have a percentage of potential recruits finding you, but you need to give up
the ideal that this form of recruiting will provide your stream of recruits to fulfil all your staffing needs.  
You need to have a plan set up instead that adopts a recruiting strategy that proactively finds them.  

Medical staffing clinicians have many options when looking for work with a staffing firm.

Dynamics is about targeting a recruit using a strategic approach that hones in the recruiting process
to individuals and then builds a friendship with them over time.  The process is long lasting, slow
moving yet allows to build relationships with potential and future recruits.  

The
recruiting dynamics approach allow a medical staffing firm to seek out recruits with the intention
of one day using them as a source of referrals and client recommendation.  It is also possible that
these recruits will one-day be the directors or managers of future facilities.  Your friendly and
relationship building will allow you to use these recruits as a reference base.  Very important that you
understand what I am talking about.  Recruiting Dynamics is not just a one process event.  It is a long-
term process that will continually flourish with the goal of keeping and having your agency stay in
business long after the initial phase.
